Prima Nova swamps them in Belle of the Turf
Brad Waters - Racenet
Sunday, 19 October 2008
Prima Nova has relished a combination of a large drop down in class and a fast tempo to record a solid win in the Listed Belle of the Turf Stakes (1600m) at Gosford.
At her previous start, Prima Nova finished on the heels of Forensics and ahead of yesterday’s Caulfield winner Mimi Lebrock when beaten 2.1 lengths in the GII Blazer Stakes at Flemington on October 4.
There were no Mimi Lebrocks or Forensics in the Belle of the Turf yet Prima Nova was sent out as at the generous odds of $6.
Prima Nova settled with only a couple behind her but Josh Parr would not have been unduly worried, especially with the fast pace being set by Miss Nikki ($21) with Stacked ($13) applying pressure.
Parr set Prima Nova alight to make her run from the 450 metres and the Anthony Cummings-trained mare made up four lengths very quickly to put herself within striking distance on the home turn.
The daughter of Danehill Dancer went right on with it over the concluding stages to post a convincing 1 ½ length win from Alverta ($5.50) who settled just off the speed and had every possible chance.
The punters sent Lustre Lady out as a $2.40 favourite but after settling in third spot had to do a little work in taking the field up to the leaders but was no match for Prima Nova’s finishing burst, maintaining her hold on third spot to the line.
The winner’s time of 1.36.43 is less than a second outside Please Reply’s track record for the 1600 metres at Gosford and is an indication of the fast pace that prevailed in the race.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained Bella Cantata ($14) was out of business soon after jumping away from the barriers when she refused to race for the first 100 metres for rider Blake Shinn.
She eventually consented to race but her chances were gone from that point with Shinn being forced to constantly niggle her to tack on to the back of the group and was unable to get into the race at any stage.
Interestingly, Bella Cantata is a half-sister to the Group I-winning mare Inaflury who herself was known as a headstrong conveyance, famously taking charge of Jim Cassidy in the 2001 Caulfield Cup.

The Central Coast Men of League Foundation will hold its first race day on Thursday (7th August) at Gosford Race Club. A strong 7-race program has been put together with race 5, the UD Trucks Men of League Cup over 1200m (ratings 71) the feature.

Joseph Pride will saddle up Schibello, a 5 year old Strategic Gelding who finally cracked his maiden status with an impressive win over the Grafton carnival. “That win up at Grafton would have given the horse a great deal of confidence and we are expecting bigger and better things from him now“ said Pride
Tickets to the Men of League corporate lunch hosted by Sky’s Dave Carlson and league legend Peter Sterling are now sold out but tickets still remain in the “sin bin”, a lawn party with BBQ and live entertainment by Eric Groathe Jnr’s band. Men of League Race To Gosford
Footy legends led by Noel Kelly, Ray Price, Eric Grothe and Steve Ella will descend on Gosford Racecourse on August 7 for the inaugural Men of League Foundation Race Day.
The Foundation was established in 2002 by tough prop and the then Judiciary Commissioner Jim Hall and Canterbury and Manly five–eighth Max Brown. It gained momentum when legendary back-rower Ron Coote expressed his concerns for former players he had discovered who were doing it tough. One of these was his hero Doug McRitchie, physically weak in a hospital on the South Coast of New South Wales. Touched by what he had learnt and what he saw, Ron with former players, set up the meeting. At this meeting 140 players, officials and referees joined up to become the founding members.
Over the last 6 years the Men of League Foundation has grown to over 6000 members, and has formed branches of the organisation in Brisbane, Illawarra and Gold Coast/Northern Rivers. Further branches will be formed in the future.
The Men of League Foundation Race Day at Gosford will not only raise much needed funds but will also promote the profile of this worthwhile and focused charity group. If you have a current or previous involvement with the great game of Rugby League you are encouraged to come out to Gosford on August 7, have a great day and support this worthwhile charity.

Captain Bax wins the Pacesetter
Racenet - Clinton Payne
Wednesday, 25 June 2008
Talented sprinter Captain Bax tasted his biggest career success when victorious in the $100,000 Listed Toohey’s New Pacesetter Stakes (1200m) at Gosford today.
The victory capped off a great week for Captain Bax’s owners, Macquarie Stud whose new stallion, Snowland, sired his first Group One winner last Saturday when Absolute Glam took out the Winter Stakes at Eagle Farm.
A fast tempo of the Pacesetter set it up for a swooper and Tim Clark hooked Captain Bax ($17) to the extreme outside in the straight and the gelding charged home to by a widening half length.
Back in second was the Gai Waterhouse-trained Mister Celestial ($2.70) who stalked the speed before taking over on straightening but he was unable to withstand the finishing burst of the winner while last year’s winner Newton’s Rings ($7.50) finished with a flurry to grab third, another three quarters of a length back.
The 1200 metre trip was run in 1.12.51 with the final 600 metres covered in 36.84.
Trainer by Kris Lees, Captain Bax is a six-year-old gelding by Snippets out of an imported mare, Snow Finch and today’s was his eighth win from 34 starts and took his career earnings to over $370,000.

Cup win a Breeze for Moses pair
Sunday, 23 March 2008
By Mandy Cottell, AAP Racing
Trainer Kevin Moses and his jockey son Shane celebrated their most significant victory together when the under-rated Bundoran Breeze won Sunday’s Listed Gosford Cup.
The 2100m feature has been a lucky race for the Moses family with Kevin, a former top jockey, winning it three times, most recently aboard Moods in 1992.
But the victory by Bundoran Breeze gave him his first Gosford Cup as a trainer and Shane his biggest victory since he was a junior rider.
“I won a couple of Listed races when I was an apprentice but it’s been a long time between drinks,” Shane Moses said.
“It’s especially good to get it on one of Dad’s horses, we’ve had a few winners together lately.
“This would be our best win together for sure.”
Bundoran Breeze ($5.50) was rated perfectly by Moses who settled him fourth and tracked favourite Manapouri ($4) throughout before getting the better of the eventual third placegetter in the straight and holding off the late charge of Country Cups warrior Precise Timing ($9) to score by a short-head.
Kevin Moses wasn’t on hand to celebrate the victory as he was at the Gold Coast for the showpiece Magic Millions carnival but Shane said they were confident the gelding could win after he worked well during the week.
He also believes Bundoran Breeze can get further saying the Group One Sydney Cup (3200m) is within his capabilities.
“He’s nominated for the Sydney Cup and he’ll run the trip,” Moses said.
“We’ve just got to get him to settle which he should do now he’s had a run over this distance.
“He pulled a bit early today when they were going slow but he was stepping up from 1500 metres.”
Precise Timing was having his 75th start but showed he had lost none of his zest with his fast-finishing second while Tania Rouse, deputising for trainer Gai Waterhouse, was pleased with the effort of Manapouri.
Blake Shinn was forced to make his run on the mare from the 600m when Jeff Penza on Lancole made a lightning move around the field and Rouse said it probably cost the favourite the race.
“Blake said he was having an ideal run but that other horse flushed him out,” Rouse said.
“She fought to the line very well and she’s improving all the time.”
Manapouri could back up in Saturday’s Randwick City Stakes if she pulls up well.
Pre-race favourite Bellagio Wynn was a late scratching from the Cup in the morning with a slight tendon strain in his near-foreleg.

Bellagio set to Wynn the Gosford Gold Cup
Source: Racenet
Thursday 20 March 2008
Promising stayer Bellagio Wynn appears well placed to break through for his first black type victory in Sunday’s $150,000 Listed Gosford Quarries Gosford Gold Cup over 2100m at Gosford.
A strong field of 14 will face the starter in the Gosford Race Club’s signature race of the year.
The Chris Waller-trained gelding, Bellagio Wynn, finished a luckless fourth at his last start in the Parramatta Cup behind Red Lord.
A suspension to jockey Jeff Lloyd has meant Dan Nikolic has replaced him on Bellagio Wynn for Sunday’s race.
“The horse is going really really well,” Waller said.
“The barrier [9] makes it a bit tricky around Gosford but he deserves a change of luck after having none at Rosehill and if he does get his fair share of fortune in the run he is the horse to beat.”
One of the hardest for Bellagio Wynn at Gosford is likely to be the Frank Underwood Cup winner Mizone which has been targeted at this race since his listed win at Rosehill back on January 12.
Other contenders include, mid north coast veteran Precise Timing, Manupori from the Gai Waterhouse stable, improving galloper Barig and the in-form Bundoran Breeze from the Kevin Moses yard.
The major support race on the program is the $50,000 Myer Sprint (1200m) where top sprinter Posadas will be hard to topple.

EI is gone
By Clinton Payne Racenet
Thursday, 28 February 2008
Minister for Primary Industries Ian Macdonald today declared victory over equine influenza (EI) almost six months after the State’s racing industry was brought to it’s knees as a result of the outbreak.
“It’s official, horse flu has now been eradicated from NSW,” Minister for Primary Industries Ian Macdonald announced today.
“This fantastic news means that from today all permit and testing requirements for moving horses within the State have been lifted.
“The only remaining precautionary requirements to move a horse are prior notification with a Travelling Horse Statement (THS) and event registration.
“The once heavily infected purple zone and the Illawarra red zone have been abolished and replaced with a minimal risk green zone. All other areas join the white zone.
“For the first time since August 25 last year horse owners are now free to move their horses anywhere within the State with a THS.
“This is a dramatic contrast to the dark days of the State-wide lockdown that stopped all horse movements and forced the cancellation of every horse event in NSW.
“I thank all parts of our horse sector – recreational and professional – for their support and assistance in stamping out the disease.
“Only a few months ago there were EI infected horses on thousands of NSW properties and at its peak over 200 new property infections each day.
“Tens of thousands of tests have been carried out and today we cannot find one single EI infected animal.
“More than 47,000 horses on 6,000 properties have now recovered from EI infection and no longer carry the disease.”
Minister Macdonald said today’s declaration follows one of the largest exotic animal disease eradication campaigns ever undertaken.
“NSW conducted a massive campaign on a scale never before seen in Australia, using the latest vaccine and laboratory testing technologies,” Minister Macdonald said.
“More than 63,000 horses have been vaccinated with the latest genetically modified vaccine.
“To date 128,000 laboratory tests have been conducted to both locate infection and demonstrate that the virus has gone.
“There have been 50,000 tests this year alone, with the majority in the highest risk purple zone where more than half of all horse properties were infected.
“The Department of Primary Industries has been unable to find any infection since December, despite actively searching for isolated pockets of virus on more than 10,000 properties in the purple zone.
“All States and the Commonwealth have agreed that the purple and red zones could be relegated to minimum risk green, and the other 97 percent of NSW to EI free white.
“Given the extensive spread of the EI virus before it was detected and its highly contagious nature, we have succeeded in stamping out this disease in an extremely short time, if not record time.
“South Africa is the only other country to have eradicated EI. New Zealand and Iceland are the only other EI free countries.
“Many international experts were pessimistic of our chances, but again we have demonstrated our proud history of successfully eradicating animal diseases.
“As a precaution, NSW will continue surveillance and testing of sick horses until we can be sure we have won the battle. It therefore remains vital to report sick horses.
“Travelling Horse Statements and event registrations will continue in the interim in the highly unlikely event an isolated pocket of virus is found.”

What A Difference A Year Makes
Gosford Race Club
Media Release, 11th Feb 2008
Eight days of straight rain, with a total of 230mm recorded. This on top of the fourth wettest year on record was not an ideal scenario for the Gosford Race Club in the lead up to yesterday’s $100,000 SGE Credit Union Gosford Guineas. Whilst the recent EI crisis had a major impact on racing it provided Gosford Race Club the necessary break to undertake significant works to improve the track as well as the oncourse facilities.
The SGE Credit Union Gosford Guineas meeting marked a year since the Club lost the 2007 Cup and Guineas meeting after jockeys deemed the track unsafe after only one race.
During the imposed EI lockdown in September and October 2007 the Gosford Race Club took the initiative to upgrade drainage from the 1100m – 600m as well as installing new drainage on the outside of the home straight to capture the runoff from the public lawns which had previously flooded the track. The work paid dividends at yesterday’s meeting with the track rating progressively improving from a heavy 10 to a heavy 8 by mid afternoon on the 10 race program.
Racing NSW’s chief steward for the meeting Steve Railton said, “the recent drainage work conducted by the Club has seen further improvement of Gosford’s racing surface. Whilst yesterday’s Guineas meeting presented us with a genuine heavy track the consistent grass coverage provided excellent footing for horses with the track on the verge of slow by the last race.”
Trainers and jockeys were full of praise for the track and track manager Steve Scollard. Larry Cassidy who took out the listed $100,000 SGE Credit Union Gosford Guineas on the Graeme Rogerson trained Cent Per Cent said “ the track was fantastic and an absolute pleasure to ride on…a credit to the club.”
Gosford Racing CEO Tony O’Mara said, “There is no doubt that the last year has been a challenge but we are hopeful that the success of yesterday’s meeting both on and off the track will point to a strong Autumn Racing Carnival including our feature meeting the Gosford Quarries Gosford Gold Cup on Easter Sunday. The work done by our team during the EI period is starting to pay dividends with the drainage paying for itself yesterday and the $250,000 upgrade of the members’ stand enabling us to provide an improved level of service for both wagering and food and beverage for members and guests.

Go Racing. Go Gosford.
By David Clarkson 31/12/2007- Chief Correspondent, Sydney Racing
My visits to provincial race meetings are few. However one place I will be returning to in 2008 is Gosford. Less than an hour from the northern suburbs of Sydney, Gosford boasts the best public grandstand outside the metropolitan area and the viewing at the compact course is second to none. Add to that food of a quality not normally seen at sporting venues and race dates to suit my days off and Gosford provides the lot for a day at the races.
Gosford was in the past perceived as a Thursday club generating high-quality TAB racing. Ably managed for many years by Malcolm Cusick and Bill Rutledge, who still sit on the current Board, chaired by the very-likeable Peter Norrgard, they have now obtained a broader selection of race dates to match the business expertise and development skills of Tony O’Mara, Chief Executive.
Go to http://www.gosfordracing.com.au and you’ll see forthcoming Gosford meetings on New Year’s Eve, Sunday 10 February (Gosford Guineas), Easter Sunday (Gosford Quarries Gosford Gold Cup), Anzac Day and the Queen’s Birthday Monday Public Holiday.
There’s also meetings in January on the 10th and 22nd which will attract many racing diehards who are holidaying on the Central Coast.
The Gosford straight is wide and the racing very competitive. Because of the standard of racing, it draws runners from premier trainers including Waterhouse, Conners, Thomsen, Waller, O’Shea, Pride, Markwell and Perry. Jockeys riding included Larry Cassidy, Blake Shinn, Jay Ford, Hugh Bowman, Rod Quinn and Kathy O’Hara, as well as local legends Allan Robinson and Robert Thompson, who fought out the finish of the Hyne & Sons Handicap with Thompson on Manoloblahniks for Kris Lees beating Robinson on Paul Perry’s three-year-old Toughened.
